Emerald athletes help Ireland win Celtic Games
ATHLONE, 7th August 2010

Sarah Lavin leads the U18 Girls 80m Hurdles in the 2010 Celtic Games at AthloneMarie Heelan and the Ireland team at the Celtic Games in Athlone

Three of our athletes wore the green of Ireland with distinction today in the annual Celtic Games hosted at Athlone IT.

Sarah Lavin completed a superb sprint double in winning both the U18 Girls 80m Hurdles and 200m. Amy O'Donoghue won the U18 Girls 1500m. Both Sarah and Amy had won their events last year at U16 level, so this was a big step up and they delivered convincingly.

Marie Heelan contributed a fine 3rd place in the U16 Girls Long Jump, only 7cm off the winner. This has been a tremendous season for Marie, who made her international debut at the Celtic Cup Indoor event last February. Marie is a top class athlete and was national champion last year at U15 Girls 80m and was on the successful Emerald 4 x 100m U17 Girls relay team that won the National championships recently at Tullamore.

In the overall event, both the Ireland girls and boys teams won their events. Well done too to Greg O'Shea of Dooneen who turned in another impressive performance to win the U16 Boys 200m.

Emerald AC takes great pride in its athletes representing Ireland, and these Games provided a fitting climax to a great athletics season for the Club.
