 Special Notice
Special Olympics 2010 coming to Limerick
Last call for Special Olympics Volunteers!

Most people know at this stage that Limerick is the host city for the 2010 Special Olympics. Operating on a 4-year cycle, hosting this event is a huge honour for the region, but time is running out for volunteering.

Plenty more are needed. Can you give the 5 days from Wed 9th to Sun 13th June inclusive to help run what will be an extraordinary event? Can you take these days off work for a fantastic movement? The minimum age is 15 years old, so there will be plenty of roles for young people too.

Please read this page at the Special Olympics website for details on how to register. Or contact the Emerald webmaster by email: webmaster@emeraldac.ie.

Due to vetting procedures, time is genuinely running out - closing date is Friday 12th March. Act now!

Olympian Thomas Chamney visits

UNIVERSITY OF LIMERICK, Tuesday 2nd March 2010 - Emerald AC was thrilled to be honoured with a visit by Irish Olympic 800m runner Thomas Chamney who gave a special talk to some of our teenage athletes tonight.

Thomas, the current Irish 800m champion, represented Ireland at that distance at the Beijing Olympics, and has the 3rd fastest 800m time ever for an Irishman.

The talk was wide ranging - on how he came to athletics success relatively late, about eating, training, lifestyle, American scholarships. Our athletes really enjoyed the session. Thanks Thomas and have a great season!

Both Nicole and Eoin are coming home with great PBs, as well as hugely valuable experience. Nicole recorded 9.87 seconds in reaching the semi-finals in the U15 Girls event, while Eoin ran his best ever time of 8.98 seconds in the U17 Boys heats.

Great to see the Emerald name at Birmingham - well done to both!

CIT CORK, Friday 26th February 2010 - Congratulations to Kyle Larkin and Amy O'Donoghue who had great results in the Munster Schools Cross Country held today at the CIT course in Cork.

Amy (Villiers School) won the Intermediate Girls race convincingly. Over a very flat course, Amy led from the start and finished a convincing winner by over 50m

Kyle (Ardscoil Rís), in his first ever season, was a great second in the Junior Boys race. In the leading pair throughout, he held his second place all the way to the finish.
